We Started Because Most Budget Advice Doesn't Work
Back in 2019, I watched my sister struggle with another failed budget spreadsheet. She wasn't reckless with money—she just couldn't make those rigid systems stick. That's when it clicked for me.
Most financial advice treats everyone like they're the same person. But we're not. Some of us need visual dashboards, others need simple daily check-ins. syrenolivar exists because sustainable money habits should adapt to your life, not the other way around.
From Frustration to Foundation
I spent years as a financial counselor in Western Sydney, and the pattern was clear: people weren't failing at money management because they lacked knowledge. They were failing because the tools didn't match how their brains actually work.
So we built something different. syrenolivar started in a shared office space in Castle Hill with three educators and one question: what if we designed budget systems around human behavior instead of accounting principles?
By mid-2024, we'd tested our approach with over 400 Australian households. The feedback was consistent—when money monitoring feels natural instead of forced, people actually stick with it.
What Drives Our Work
Reality Over Theory
We teach systems that work for actual households, not textbook scenarios. Your budget needs to survive Tuesday afternoon impulse purchases and unexpected car repairs.
Behavior First
Numbers matter, but habits matter more. We focus on building monitoring routines that become automatic—like checking your phone battery before leaving the house.
No Shame Approach
Financial mistakes aren't moral failures. They're data points. We create learning environments where overspending gets analyzed, not judged.
How We Actually Teach This Stuff
Pattern Recognition First
Before we talk about budgets, you'll spend two weeks just observing your money patterns. Most people have never actually looked at their spending without immediately trying to fix it. This observation phase reveals your real financial behaviors—not the ones you wish you had.
Custom System Design
Once we understand your patterns, we build a monitoring system that matches your lifestyle. If you're a visual thinker, you'll get color-coded dashboards. If you prefer simplicity, you'll get three numbers to check daily. The tool adapts to you.
Gradual Habit Building
We don't expect you to transform overnight. Our programs run over six to eight months because that's how long behavioral change actually takes. Each month focuses on one core habit until monitoring your budget feels as natural as checking the weather.
Ongoing Adjustment Support
Life changes, and your budget system should too. Whether you change jobs, have a kid, or face unexpected expenses, we help you adjust your monitoring approach so it stays relevant and useful.
Meet Your Lead Educator
Our teaching approach comes from years of hands-on work with real households facing actual money challenges. We're not theorists—we're practitioners who've seen what works and what doesn't.
Dermot Finbarr
Lead Financial Educator
I've been teaching practical money management since 2016, working primarily with households who've tried traditional budgeting and found it unsustainable. My background is in behavioral economics, which basically means I study why people make the financial decisions they do—even when those decisions seem illogical.
What I've learned is that most budget failures aren't about discipline or knowledge. They're about mismatched systems. When we align monitoring tools with how your brain naturally processes information, financial management becomes significantly easier.
Outside of syrenolivar, I volunteer with community financial literacy programs in Western Sydney and contribute to research on behavioral money habits in Australian households.
